Tony Allen is one of the greatest drummers on the planet – the man who created Afrobeat with Fela Kuti. Allen’s particular genius has been his ability to lie just behind the beat, pushing and pulling the song without calling too much attention to himself. On stage he and his band are a supergroup – a mix of James Brown, Prince, Art Blakey and Bob Marley. Allen pushed the boundaries of Afrobeat, fusing jazz, funk, dub and psychedelic pop and masterfully changing tempos and cross rhythms. Being a musical alchemist, Allen set out new directions by rejuvenating the traditional beat with more contemporary cutting edge sounds. Going on with his mission Allen, just presented his 10th Album „Film of Life“. This record stands for the Afrobeat – Tradition but combines it with modern Groove Elements and Blackspoitation sounds. Again a masterpiece of the all Time African Drummer Legend.
»The lively pacing of Allen’s percussive polyrhythms, mixed with the chorus of female voices and tight horn arrangements certainly sound reminiscent of afrobeat’s golden age.« okay africa
»When you are rightly praised as the greatest drummer Africa has produced, and helped to create Afrobeat along with Fela Kuti, then there’s no need for indulgent solos.« The Guardian
